Portugal: The Western Most Nation Of Europe

Portugal is a land bisected by the rivers flowing from Spain on the east. It is a place that gives you a varied experience ranging from beaches to rugged mountains and from countryside to busy cities. Taking even the overseas territories of Azores and Madeira Islands into account, the total area in square kilometers is found to be slightly lesser than the Indiana state of US.

The river valleys are a place for agriculture. There are Olive groves and vineyards across the nation including even the coastal regions.

Portuguese are known for their hospitality and the ability to adapt to changes in trade. However, they are known to have a strong will power, which is quite evident from the fact that they still hold onto their traditional occupation of fishing. The population of this nation is found to be around ten million of which four million are spread all around the globe. This fact shows the migratory nature of Portuguese. This pattern in their way of life is not something unusual as it is already known for great sailors and explorers from the past like Vasco da Gamma.

It is blessed with a vast coastline being a part of the Iberian Peninsula, with the Mediterranean Sea and The North Atlantic Ocean on either side of its rectangular land, it not surprising that sea food forms a vital part of the Portuguese Gastronomy. A mandatory dish in a traditional Portuguese meal is the soup: "caldo verde". Olive oil is widely used for cooking. It is due to the climatic conditions and its location on the globe that it is popular not only for olive oil but for unique flavours of wine too.The meat cooked in the Portuguese style along with the exotic use of cheese in their dishes makes the experience of having a Portuguese feast an unforgettable one. Their traditional wines, egg pastries, sponge cakes and other desserts made of sugar and fruits take your feast to completion.
