“Scientists” are those who are often quoted as experts, but it is not necessary they must be perfect all the time. It is because they are also basically human beings too. It is our misconception that we always put them on a higher platform. Although, some minor mistakes are pardonable, here are a few that question the basic understandings of science.

Mistake#1 – The role of heart:

It is not necessary for you to be a doctor for knowing the importance of heart in one’s body. But from the pages of past, it has been known that even if you were a doctor in Greece dating centuries back, then you could have believed and practiced that liver was much more vital than heart. Sounds funny? It was a socially widespread theory hypothesized by Greek physician Galen. This belief was broken to shatters in 1628 when an English physician, William Harvey revealed the truth in his book “An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals”. Now, a few hundred years later the earlier hypothesis seems to be a fact far from common sense. Isn’t it?

Mistake #2 –The Geocentric Theory:

Ptolemy’s hypothesis that earth was the centre of our universe is yet another blunder on the list. It perhaps shows the limitation of human reach during his period. Humans have not even known the original size of the universe at that time that their ideas have been revolving around the earth itself. A shocking fact is that this theory has been unshaken and firm for almost a millennium or so. Copernicus was the first person to break this misconception with his heliocentric theory. Sounds strange? One more thing is yet to come!!

Mistake #3 - Heavier Objects Fall Faster:

Have you ever wondered if heavier objects fall faster than lighter ones? Today, anybody who can apply a basic part of his/her common sense can answer this question. But, in the past, the great thinker and philosopher Aristotle got this wrong. It has been told that when he performed an experiment from the leaning tower of Pisa, he got results that gravity accelerated all objects alike! It is not clear yet what he meant by gravity. Today the definition for the term “gravity” has reached refinement and according to Einstein, it is even seen as a curvature in the space-time fabric present all through the universe!

So, don’t get bowled out by any new theory that comes into the world of science. Whoever may post such theories, beware to stick to the basics and never accept it as soon as it comes out! Yeah, Mother Nature is difficult to understand sometimes…
