Alopecia Areata (AA) is a disease which causes baldness usually in the central scalp in the form of oval patches that spreads all through the scalp and at extreme and rare case is found to spread all through the body. AA is supposed to be a medical term referring to baldness in general and has further classifications based on the nature and the place where it causes hair loss. The further classifications like Androgenic Alopecia, Universalis Alopecia, and Totalis Alopecia differ not only in the places where they cause baldness but also in baldness patterns in men and women. AA is the term referring to such a disease only in humans but one similar to this is also found in other animals too.
It is generally known to be a cyclic process consisting of continuous hair fall and growth. With lapse of time the rate of former grows predominant. Moreover, with each cycle the thickness of the hair that grows decreases gradually. The term AA is generally used to refer to such a condition in Homo sapiens. However, a similar condition is found to exist even among other animals. AA is found over all age groups and unpredictable in nature.
